I Am Not Your Enemy abandons the acoustic vibe for twangy guitars and a Vox Continental organ, like something Lee Hazelwood would have conjured up for Nancy Sinatra. Opening track On The Swings sounds instantly familiar without actually sounding like anything else. Produced by Carwyn Ellis, the album’s primarily acoustic ambience is at times reminiscent of Nick Drake or Marianne Faithful’s early work. These influences remain on this, her second solo album. Her name might not ring a bell, but her voice will flood your memory holes with 20 years of effervescent post acid indie house. Recorded and produced by the not inconsiderable talents of Colorama’s Carwyn Ellis and Seb Lewsley, who has worked with the likes of Edwyn Collins and The Cribs, ‘Red Kite. Sarah Cracknell is, of course, the singer with Saint Etienne a band that have always embraced the sounds of the sixties and seventies. Eighteen years on from her first solo offering, Sarah Cracknell has conjured a pastoral pop album nurtured across two weeks of work in a barn either side of Christmas.
