It produces sharp, clean type and images and is one of the cheapest methods for commercial printing. Offset printing, now more than a century in development, continues to be one of the most commonly utilized printing methods today for newspapers, magazines, books and other printed works. Advances continued in photo printing and typesetting, color printing, and processes such as offset lithography and silk screen printing in the early 1900s. Hoe invented the steam-powered rotary printing press in 1843, making it possible to print millions of copies of a page in a day. Their company, Koenig & Bauer AG, continues to be one of the largest manufacturers of printing presses in the world. German printer Friedrich Koenig, with help from German engineer Andreas Friedrich Bauer, introduced the first steam press, which doubled productivity to 1,100 impressions per hour, in 1811. Gutenberg died in 1468 at the age of 70, his savings gone after a legal dispute with a business partner, but the basic mechanics of his hand-operated printing press design continued, virtually unchanged, until the advent of steam-powered printing presses in the early 1800s. Historians credit the printing press as a key element of the Renaissance movement. Literacy rates climbed as book prices fell, and advances in science and other fields circulated widely. His first large-scale print job, 200 illustrated Latin Bibles, was printed in 1455, all of them pre-sold.īy 1500, an estimated half a million books had been printed.
